Effects of exercise, nutrition and genetics on health and physical performance.
Summary
The Applied Physiology & Nutrition Group is part of the Center of Lifestyle Medicine and is dedicated to conducting comprehensive and transdisciplinary studies, whether clinical or experimental, aimed at uncovering the role of physical activity and nutrition in sports, aging, obesity, and chronic diseases. The research laboratories utilized by the group are located at the School of Medicine (LIM-17), the University Clinical Hospital (Laboratory of Rheumatology Assessment and Conditioning), and the School of Physical Education and Sports at USP. Together, these laboratories offer extensive possibilities for nutritional and physiological testing and assessment of patients and athletes, as well as the prescription of intervention programs. The research involves investigations ranging from in vitro models to experimental and clinical designs aimed at expanding clinical, mechanistic (including physiology, biomechanics, motor control, etc., as well as behavioral aspects), and integrative understanding of the acute and chronic roles of nutrition, physical activity, and genetics on health, quality of life, and athletic performance in various populations. We conduct clinical trials, molecular analyses of gene and protein expression, enzymatic assays, high-performance liquid chromatography, histology, and cytology. The Group has over 75 members, including undergraduate (IC) and graduate students (master’s and doctoral candidates), postdoctoral researchers, and foreign professors, and also actively collaborates with various national and international researchers.
