Line of research:

Osteoarthritis – clinical and experimental research, Gout and uric acid – clinical research

Summary

Osteoarthritis:

Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent of the musculoskeletal diseases. It results from the failure of the articular cartilage and the subchondral bone that leads to progressive deterioration of the joint. In the clinical line, treatment is focused on biomechanical intervention and the use of experimental procedures (e.g., neurological ablation, vascular embolization, platelet-rich plasma). Another clinical line is the study of the relationship between osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.

In the basic line, the laboratory has perfected experimental osteoarthritis models for research on therapeutic interventions. In in vitro studies, the laboratory works on the chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal cells for tissue repair applications.

Gout and uric acid:

It is the most common inflammatory joint disease of the human species. Uric acid, in addition to being considered the protagonist of gout, is currently considered an independent risk factor for cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases. It can be both an oxidizing aggressor agent and in some circumstances a protective factor against tissue damage. The line of research is the clinical study of gout and uric acid, as well their relationship to cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases.
